YOLO – Student Writing Program

YOLO: You Only Live Once Red Ribbon Week Monologue Project Teachers, Please Submit Your Best Student Monologue!

For decades The Mountain Playhouse in Jennerstown, PA has been dedicated to bringing theatrical programming to students of all ages throughout West Central Pennsylvania, introducing generations of children to the magic of live professional theater. We have expanded programming to include students from K-12 and are pleased with its impact on the young people of the region.

Now the Education Committee of The Mountain Playhouse is expanding its mission, by providing students with the opportunity to use drama to express themselves regarding issues of importance to them. One of the most serious issues facing our region, and indeed the whole country, is the drug epidemic. We all know that this epidemic has broken individuals, families, and communities and is something our children are facing every day.

In response, this year the Education Committee of The Mountain Playhouse is sponsoring a Monologue Project, the theme of which is “You Only Live Once” (YOLO). We are hoping that you will encourage your students to write, prepare, and deliver 2-4 minute monologues and short scripts reflecting the theme of substance abuse and how it has affected their lives. These can be included as part of your regular curriculum or part of a school assembly. Our goal is to incorporate the performing arts with life experiences in which students can relate their own personal thoughts and have an opportunity to perform. All participants will receive a Certificate of Appreciation, and two (2) theater tickets to a show of their choice during the 2017 Mountain Playhouse season. In addition, the Education Committee will select several monologues to be delivered at its Perform-a-thon in May 2017.

To begin the process, students should go to the Mountain Playhouse website at www.mountainplayhouse.org and click the “You Only Live Once” button. There they should fill out the entry form and waiver. Then, when the monologues are ready, students can have their work recorded and submitted as a video file at the above link. All submissions are due by the end of Friday, March 31, 2017. The committee will select the submissions to be delivered by Friday, April 28, 2017.

We encourage educators like yourself to help bring to light different solutions to the issue of drug and substance abuse. Please feel free to share this information with any other educators to make this project a success. Perhaps by having our students talk and create through the performing arts, we can help them become healthy, successful citizens.
